Smith Green: University of Indianapolis
Can you imagine a highly rated, private university without a quad for student and campus everyday activities? The removal of a crumbling asphalt parking lot, replaced with a great, tilted lawn oval and recessed, linear water feature fulfills a long held dream first outlined in an Olmsted directed Master Plan from 1921. The strength of this “relatively” empty green heart is the strong perimeter definition created by the respectful brick architecture; plantings of closely spaced groves of Bald Cypress; the joyous color the perennial gardens; and the surprising sky captured in the glass-like reflection of the Long Canal. Two intimate bronze fountains terminate each end of the canal, bringing commissioned art and the sound of water close to everyone on the perimeter circle walk.
