Illinois & Michigan Canal Heritage Corridor Plan
This multi-disciplined effort outlining the adaptive reuse of Lockport’s under-used historic canal, warehouses and Main Street commercial buildings was the foundation document used to establish this nation’s first Industrial Heritage Corridor by the National Park Service. The Plan, unusual for HAER, developed a series of reclamation strategies along the 1839 Canal between Lockport and Joliet, Illinois for public recreation and trails; incorporated lost historic structures into preservation and interpretive plans; sought the restoration of selected historic buildings; and redirected off-road recreation vehicles from fragile Des Plaines River landscapes to a unique, dedicated public park located in an overgrown, abandoned gravel quarry.
