South White River Greenway Trail
This 2.5 mile segment will offer a unique pedestrian experience along the downtown Indianapolis reach of the White River. Located in the riparian ecosystem of river bottomland and subject to frequent flooding, the trail offers a variety of wilderness-like settings ranging from sunny, tall grass ‘meadows’ to thickly shaded woodland thickets that seem natural, but are in fact composed of succession landscapes following the abandonment of Industry using the river and the construction of flood prevention levees. Interpretive stories about the lost landscapes of baseball, a pioneer cemetery, and nineteenth century industry unfolds along the trail as it undulates across the this landscape in gentle curves responding to natural terrain, vegetation, stormwater outfalls, bridges and desirable views.
