Mapleton Village & Market Place
A proposed urban in-fill development on marginal vegetated ground owned by a Cemetery sought to showcase an innovative role-model for sustainable construction and ecologically sensitive water management using LEED and other ‘Green’ planning and engineering principals in Indianapolis. Guiding principles included [1] to manage water at the source, [2] to manage water on the surface, [3] to diminish stormwater out fall, [4] to eliminate reliance on city water for irrigation, and [5] to let nature do the work, providing on-site treatment. Water quality and runoff reduction applications included green alleys, forested wetlands, curbless streets w/vegetated rain gardens, and distributed underground storage. The idea and desire was to make a walkable, affordable, and neighborhood oriented community that placed emphasis on shaping a connection between people and the visible cycles of nature.
